MAKER STORY:
Vista Alegre Porcelain Factory was the first industrial porcelain maker in Portugal, founded in 1824 by José Ferreira Pinto Basto. Fueled by a royal license issued by the king, they began by producing high-quality glassware, particularly with engraved patterns and ornate borders. But in 1880, the factory focused exclusively on porcelain. The company's blend of old world artisanship and specialized manufacturing made it one of Europe's leading manufacturers. They began producing exclusive pieces, a service which began with Queen Elizabeth II. In recent years, the Vista Alegre Group merged with Atlantis Group, and resumed production on glassware, as well as producing chinaware, ovenware, crystal, hotelware and tableware. Today, more than one of Portugal's top porcelain producers, the company is also a piece of the country's heritage.
